Iceland's Ring Road from $2,086

Follow the Ring Road that takes you around the coast of the country on a journey to explore Iceland's rich natural treasures,  including national parks, beautiful waterfalls, striking glaciers, magnificent volcanoes and hot springs. You will explore and experience all of the well-known attractions in the south, east and north of Iceland. This includes Reykjavik city, Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir and other hot springs, Thingvellir, Skaftafell and Jokulsargljufur National Park, and much more.

Duration: 9 Nights in Iceland

Accommodations: Country hotels, guesthouses, summer hotels and farm holiday guesthouses.  All rooms have private bathrooms.  A hotel list will be sent with your trip confirmation.

Itinerary

Iceland Circle

Departure Day: Depart from North America on evening flight (all gateways) or afternoon flight (Boston or New York). Complimentary soft drinks and in seat entertainment system.  Meals and headsets available for purchase or bring your own.

Day 1: Arrival Day: After going through customs, head to the Fly Bus waiting at the curb outside the airport. Give your Fly Bus transfer (included in documents) to driver or attendant on bus. Transfer to hotel in Reykjavik for your first night in Iceland.  There should be a pack of documents concerning your journey for you at the hotel. (No meals included today)

Day 2: Drive across Hellisheidi plateau to the greenhouse village of Hveragerdi.  Continue to the waterfall Gullfoss and the hot springs at Geysir.  Visit Thingvellir National Park, site of the ancient Icelandic parliament, before driving through Hvalfjordur fjord or Kaldidalur highland pass (4WD needed) to Borgarfjordur. (B)

Day 3: Drive north through Borgarfjordur to the shores of Hunafloi bay and the towering mountains and horse-breeding valley of Skagafjordur.  Continue to Akureyri, the charming and colorful capital of the north. (B) Optional (booked in Iceland): River rafting in Skagafjordur, horse riding in Skagafjordur.
 
Day 4: Spend the morning exploring the town of Akureyri. Though small in size, this town near the Arctic Circle boasts a great number of art galleries, restaurants, museums and parks.  The Botanical Gardens are a real highlight of the area.   Continue your journey to the unique Lake Myvatn area, stopping en route to view Godafoss Falls. (B)

Day 5: Explore the natural wonders of Lake Myvatn and surrounding area, including the mystical lava formations at Dimmuborgir.  Visit the volcanic area of Krafla along with the colorful, primordial slopes of Namaskard pass. (B)

Day 6: Drive north to the fishing port of Husavik and around Tjornes peninsula.  Visit Asbyrgi, a magnificent horseshoe-shaped canyon and Jokulsargljufur National Park.  Proceed to Dettifoss, Europe's mightiest waterfall, before heading across the highland plateau to Egilsstadir. (B) Optional (booked in Iceland): Whale watching from Húsavík

Day 7: Drive south through the spectacular East Fjords, where towering mountains plunge vertically into the ocean.  The journey continues to the town of Hofn in Hornafjordur, a gateway to the south coast. (B)
Optional (booked in Iceland): Petra’s stone collection, boat tour to Papey Island.

Day 8: Drive to the shimmering icebergs and still, milky waters of Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon before continuing to Skaftafell National Park where a hike can be recommended.  Then it's on to Kirkjubæjarklaustur, a picturesque town sitated between two glaciers. (B) Optional (booked in Iceland): Jeep tour to Vatnajokull glacier, Boat tour on Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon, glacier hike in Skaftafell area.

Day 9: Drive along the spectacular south coast, a sweeping landscape of black sand deserts, rocky shores and rolling farmland sandwiched between snow-capped glaciers, mountains and the ocean. Return to Reykjavík where you drop off your car. Enjoy your last evening in the lively capital of Iceland. (B)

Day 10: Fly Bus transfer to Keflavik airport. (B)
