Itinerary

Volcanoes and Glaciers

Day 1: Evening departure from North America Complimentary snacks, soft drinks and in-seat entertainment system will be available during the flights. 

Day 2: Early morning arrival in Keflavik International Airport.  Early morning arrival in Keflavik International Airport. Show your service information on FlyBus transfer to the attendant at the FlyBus kiosk in the arrivals hall and let him/her know which hotel you will be staying at.  The Flybus waits at the curb outside the hall.  You will be transferred to your hotel.  The rest of the day is free for your own activities.  We suggest a visit to the local geothermal swimming pools, a really unique and fun Iceland experience you can enjoy year-round!  (No meals included). There should be an envelope of information concerning your journey for you at the hotel. IMPORTANT:  If you have added in extra nights before your tour starts, you will need to get yourself to the hotel where the actual first night of this tour starts. Please see your accommodation list for address and phone of the tour’s first night hotel.

Day 3: (B,D) Breakfast at hotel.  The tour departs from Reykjavík.   Travel south through the greenhouse town of Hveragerdi.  Fertile farmland and glacial rivers abound as you continue through the south of Iceland on the way to Skogar and Skogafoss waterfall.   Visit with the farmers of Thorvaldseyri Farm located at the foot of the world famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano that  erupted in the spring of 2010.  A visitors center/family-run exhibit was opened in spring 2011.  View a 20 minute film about the spectacular natural event.  Next,  stop  at she Skogar Folk Musem before continuing on to Sólheimajökull Glacier where an optional glacial walking tour is offered.

Day 4: (B, D)

Europe’s Largest National Park and Glacier – Glacial Lagoon with Icebergs

Travel through  Kirkjubæjarklaustur, former site of a Medieval convent,  towards Skaftafell National Park, one of Iceland’s most outstanding areas of natural beauty.  The area is dominated by magnificent views of the mighty Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier. We continue to Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon where huge icebergs float and grind together in the still, deep waters of the lagoon.
Back to Vík area for overnight.

Day 5: (B, D)

Westman Islands -  Pompeii of the North

Travel along the south coast to Landeyjarhöfn harbor. After arriving at the pier at Bakkafjara  take a 30 minute ferry to the Westman Islands. Once there,  the group will explore Heimaey Island, the largest of the Westman Islands. Other adventures of the day include a visit to the puffins in Storhofdi, a walk up to the crater of a volcano that erupted only a few years ago and exploring flora of the new lava fields.  After lunch the group will have some extra time to explore the Islands on their own.

Overnight in Laugarvatn or Hveragerdi area depending on season.

Note: If the route to the Westman Islands is closed due to weather conditions (spring or early summer) the tour will then continue through lava fields and outwash sands formed by floods from the volcano Katla and onwards to Laugarvatn.

 

Day 6: (B, D)

Exploding Geysers - The Famous Golden Falls - National Park with Geological Wonders (UNESCO)

Depart for the Geysir hot spring area to see the famous great Geysir and Strokkur, a hot spring that spouts every few minutes.  Travel on to Gullfoss , one of Iceland’s most impressive waterfalls.  The  next stop is Thingvellir National Park, where the ancient parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland’s largest lake. Take some time to enjoy this geological and historical wonder before heading back to Reykjavik.
Overnight stay in Reykjavík.


Day 7: (B) Catch some last minute shopping or sightseeing before afternoon Fly Bus transfer to Keflavík International Airport. Complimentary snacks, soft drinks and in-seat entertainment system will be available during the flights.  Meals, headsets and blankets available for purchase or provide your own.
