When you book your self-drive tour with Icelandair, you’ll receive an internet-connected tablet with a new self-drive app when you pick up your vehicle. Its easy-to-use interface lets you see your trip mapped out day by day, thousands of points of interests, services, and a GPS road guide that will take you right to your hotel after a day of exploring. The Iceland Travel Companion provides detailed information on accommodations for your entire trip as well as must-see stops along the way. If you’ve opted to include additional days on your tour package, they will also be represented in the app.  For those who want more information on Iceland, there’s a pdf road book available in selected languages right in the app navigation—making sure that you get the trip you want.

Day 1 - Departure Day

Evening departure from North America. 

Day 2 - Arrival Day; Geothermal Lagoon – Flower Village – Geothermal Greenhouses

From Keflavik International Airport we recommend driving the southern coast of the Reykjanes peninsula towards your first overnight stay in the charming village of Hveragerdi. This village is one of the few sites in the world located directly on top of a geothermal area and, because of its many greenhouses heated by hot water from nearby, springs it is often called the “flower village.“ Overnight in Hveragerdi. Total distance covered approximately 62 miles (100 km).

Day 3 - Waterfalls, Geysers, Cliffs, Stone Arches, Black Sand Beaches of the South Shore

Visit the majestic Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, the infamous Eyjafjallajokull glacier (location of the 2010 eruption) and the surrounding area affected by the volcanic eruption of 2010.

Dyrholaey is a rocky headland characterized by a black lava arch. Every year thousands of sea birds, and puffins nest here during the summer. Puffins are generally in Iceland between mid-May and early August. Please note that Dyrholaey is usually closed during nesting season in the spring, from middle of May through late June. Overnight in the Vik area. Total distance covered approximately 118 miles (190 km).

Day 4 - Europe's Largest National Park, Glacial Lagoon with Icebergs, Europe's Largest Glacier

Visit the awe-inspiring Skaftafell National Park, which is set between glaciers and offers many hiking possibilities. Continue to the shimmering icebergs of Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon before returning to the charming village of Vik in the afternoon. Overnight in the Vik area. Total distance covered approximately 240 miles (385 km).

Day 5 - National Park of Geological Wonders (UNESCO), Europe's Most Powerful Hot Spring 

Drive to Thingvellir National Park, a jewel of nature that includes the original site of the oldest parliamentary institution in the world, Althing. The park, a stunning volcanic landscape of mountains and lava flows, is situated on the border of Iceland's largest lake. Continue to Borgarfjordur fjord and visit the historic site of Reykholt, the remarkably beautiful Hraunfoss and Barnafoss waterfalls and Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in Europe. Overnight in the Borgarfjordur area. Total distance covered approximately 250 miles (400 km).

Day 6 - Sea Cliffs with Birdlife, Rock Formations, Quaint Fishing Villages

Explore the countless natural wonders of the Snaefellsnes peninsula. Visit Arnarstapi sea cliffs with its varied birdlife and the rocky beach of Djupalonssandur before driving along the north coast through lively fishing villages. Overnight in Stykkisholmur or Borgarfjordur area. Total distance covered approximately 200 miles (330 km).

Day 7 - Volcanic Landscapes, Bubbling Mud Pools, Quaint Fishing Village, Geothermal Spa

Drive to Reykjanes peninsula and visit the moon-like surrounding of Lake Kleifarvatn and Krysuvik geothermal area with bubbling mud pools. Visit Grindavik fishing village and the famous Blue Lagoon for a relaxing dip in the pleasantly warm geothermal waters which are known to be rich in silica and minerals that are great for the skin. Overnight in Reykjavik. Total distance covered approximately 100 miles (170 km).

Note: The Blue Lagoon must be booked in advance

Day 8 - Departure Day

Start the morning with a Scandinavian buffet breakfast, included as part of your hotel stay. The remainder of your morning is open for own activities. Drive back to Keflavik International Airport and even stop at Blue Lagoon, if you were unable to previously.

Note: We strongly recommend arriving at the airport no later than two hours prior to departure. 


A list of your accommodations (which range from country hotels, guesthouses, summer hotels to farm holiday guesthouses) will be sent with your trip confirmation up to a few weeks after you have booked. Properties used, ranging from independently owned properties to chains such as FossHotel and Hotel Edda, may vary based on departure date, but will be of a similar standard, and include private bathrooms. Please note that your room may not be ready for immediate check-in, as guaranteed early check-in is not included in packages. The last night of your vacation is in the capital Reykjavik, with all other nights spent along your driving route.

Note: The tour operator has the right to change hotels in package based on availability. Substitute hotels are of similar quality.

  • Changes and cancellations: Once confirmed, vacation packages cannot be altered, including travel dates, hotels, etc. For amendments to your travel plans you may cancel your booking, up to 30 days prior to departure, for a fee of $400 per person. Bookings cannot be cancelled 29 days or less prior to departure. Cancellations made within 24 hours of booking are fully refundable. Individual passengers in a multi-passenger booking who wish to cancel are not eligible for a refund

Note: We strongly advise to not book additional tour add-ons during days 2-7. You will be staying overnight in the countryside on these days, and add-ons are based on pick-ups and drop-offs in Reykjavik. You will receive information from us with suggestions of activities to do on your arrival and departures dates, including contact information for booking them in Iceland. We recommend arranging such activities once you have arrived in Iceland.
